Formed from the hydrothermal metamorphism of granite, where plagioclase feldspar is replaced by epidote. Heavily associated with the Blue Ridge Mountains of the United States (Proterozoic era).

Primarily used as a semi-precious gemstone for jewelry (beads, cabochons), decorative carvings, architectural facing, and as a popular river-tumble for rock hounding.

Unakite was named after the Unaka Range in North Carolina, USA, where it was first discovered. It is the state rock of Virginia.

Field identification & locations

Identify by its unique 'pistachio green' and 'salmon pink' mottling. It is frequently found as water-worn pebbles in riverbeds and on beaches in the Appalachian region and around the Great Lakes.
