Formed through the hydro-thermal metamorphism of granite, where plagioclase feldspar is replaced by epidote. Usually associated with Precambrian or Paleozoic geological environments.

Predominantly used as a lapidary stone for beads, cabochons, and small carvings. Also used in architectural ornamentation and as a popular stone for chakra balancing in metaphysical practices.

Geological facts

Unakite was first discovered in the Unaka Range of North Carolina, USA, from which it takes its name. It is the state rock of Virginia.

Field identification & locations

Identify in the field by its unique 'pistachio green' and 'salmon pink' mottled appearance. It is commonly found in riverbeds and beaches along the Blue Ridge Mountains and Lake Superior. Collectors should look for balanced color saturation.
