Formation & Geological History

Formed from the rapid cooling of silica-rich rhyolitic lava. These rounded nodules are often found embedded in gray, friable perlite beds, representing pebbles of obsidian that did not undergo hydration.

Uses & Applications

Commonly used in jewelry (pendants, rings), lapidary art (tumbling), and highly valued in metaphysical/collecting communities.

Geological Facts

Legend says they were formed from the tears of Apache women mourning warriors who leapt to their deaths rather than be captured. True Apache Tears are naturally rounded and feel smooth, unlike crushed obsidian shards.

Field Identification & Locations

Identify by holding the dark pebble up to a strong light source; a true Apache Tear will show translucency (smoky brown/gray) rather than being opaque black. Frequently found in the American Southwest, specifically Arizona and Nevada.
