Formation & Geological History
Formed through the hydrothermal metamorphism of granite, where plagioclase feldspar is replaced by epidote. Found in mountainous regions, often in Precambrian basement rocks and associated with veins.
Uses & Applications
Primarily used as a semi-precious gemstone for jewelry (cabochons, beads), decorative carvings, architectural stone, and as a popular specimen for lapidary work.
Geological Facts
Unakite was first discovered in the Unaka Range of the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina/Tennessee, USA. It is the state rock of Virginia.
Field Identification & Locations
Identify by its distinctive 'pistachio green' and 'salmon pink' mottled appearance. It lacks the typical foliated structure of most metamorphic rocks, resembling granite but with a high green epidote content. Common in the Appalachian Mountains and glacial till near the Great Lakes.
