Unakite is an altered granite that has undergone hydrothermal metamorphism. It forms when original granitic rocks are altered by hot fluids, transforming plagioclase into green epidote while retaining pink orthoclase and quartz.

Uses & applications

Used primarily as a semi-precious gemstone for cabochons, beads, and carvings. Also used as an architectural stone for countertops and floor tiles.

Geological facts

Unakite is named after the Unaka Range of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the southeastern United States, where it was first discovered. It is the state rock of Virginia.

Field identification & locations

Identified by its unique 'pistachio and salmon' color combination. Commonly found in riverbeds and on beaches (like Lake Superior) as tumbled pebbles. Look for the distinct green and pink mottled pattern.
