Physical properties
Hardness: 7 (Mohs scale); Color: Banded purple and white/gray; Luster: Vitreous (glassy); Crystal structure: Hexagonal (Trigonal); Cleavage: None (conchoidal fracture); Specific gravity: 2.65
Formation & geological history
Formed in hydrothermal veins or volcanic cavities where layers of purple amethyst and white milky quartz intergrow during fluctuating temperature and pressure phases. These deposits range from hundreds of millions to billions of years old.
Uses & applications
Primarily used for ornamental purposes, cabochons for jewelry, pocket 'worry' stones, decorative carvings, and within the metaphysical community as a meditation aid.
Geological facts
Chevron amethyst is unique because it displays a naturally occurring 'V' shaped or zigzag pattern of quartz layers. It is considered one of the 'powerful' combinations of both Amethyst and White Quartz properties in folklore.
Field identification & locations
Identify in the field by the distinct banding of deep purple alongside opaque white quartz; it will scratch glass easily but cannot be scratched by a steel knife. Common locations include Brazil, Uruguay, Namibia, and India.
