Physical properties
Hardness: 7 on the Mohs scale. Color: Banded purple and white/clear in a 'V' or chevron pattern. Luster: Vitreous (glassy). Crystal Structure: Hexagonal (trigonal). Cleavage: None (conchoidal fracture). Specific Gravity: 2.65.
Formation & geological history
Formed in hydrothermal veins or volcanic geodes where alternating layers of quartz and amethyst are deposited. The 'chevron' pattern occurs through cyclical changes in the levels of iron and manganese during crystallization.
Uses & applications
Primarily used for ornamental purposes, lapidary work (cabochons and carvings), and as a popular specimen for metaphysical or crystal collectors.
Geological facts
Chevron Amethyst is a combination of Amethyst and White Quartz. It is one of the few purple stones that naturally occurs with such distinct, sharp banding. Higher iron content and natural irradiation are responsible for the purple hue of the quartz.
Field identification & locations
Identify by a distinct V-shaped banding of purple and white. Commonly found in large deposits in Brazil, Uruguay, Namibia, and India. It is highly resistant to scratching compared to fluorite, which can look similar but is much softer.
