Unakite is named after the Unaka Range of the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina/Tennessee where it was first discovered. It is the state rock of Virginia.
Field identification & locations
Identify in the field by its distinct mottled pink and green 'pistachio' appearance. It is commonly found as pebbles and cobbles in riverbeds downstream from metamorphic mountain ranges, especially in the Blue Ridge Mountains of the USA, South Africa, and Brazil.
