Produced in the digestive system of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus). It forms around undigested squid beaks. It floats in the ocean and undergoes photo-oxidation and saltwater seafaring for years to decades.

Historical use as a high-end perfume fixative (stabilizer); currently used in expensive niche fragrances for its longevity and unique musky scent.
