Formation & Geological History
Formed through the pseudomorphism (replacement) of crocidolite fibers (blue asbestos) by quartz. The iron from the crocidolite oxidizes to form the golden-brown goethite, creating the signature color and chatoyancy.
Uses & Applications
Primarily used as a gemstone for jewelry (cabochons, beads), decorative figurines, and as a popular specimen for rock collectors and metaphysical use.
Geological Facts
Tiger's Eye is famous for its 'chatoyancy', or the cat-eye effect, caused by the reflection of light off the parallel mineral fibers within the stone. If the quartz replaces the crocidolite without the iron oxidizing, it remains blue and is called 'Hawk's Eye'.
Field Identification & Locations
Identify by its distinct golden-yellow chatoyant bands that shimmer as the stone is rotated under light. It is commonly found in South Africa, Western Australia, India, and Burma.
