Ruby in Fuchsite (often confused with Ruby in Zoisite)
Corundum (Al2O3) in Chromium-rich Muscovite (KAl2(AlSi3O10)(OH)2)
Rock Type: metamorphic

Physical Properties
Hardness: 9 (Ruby crystals) and 2-3 (Fuchsite matrix); Color: Pink/Red crystals in a Sea-foam green/blue-grey matrix; Luster: Vitreous to Pearly; Structure: Monoclinic; Cleavage: Perfect mica-like cleavage in matrix.
Formation & Geological History
Formed through regional metamorphism. Often found in greenstone belts where chromium and aluminum are present, allowing the growth of corundum within the mica-rich host rock.
Uses & Applications
Primarily used for decorative carvings, cabochons for jewelry, and as a popular metaphysical or collector's specimen.
Geological Facts
Many specimens also contain a thin blue-grey ring around the ruby crystals consisting of kyanite, which is a key indicator for ruby in fuchsite versus ruby in zoisite. It is often called the 'stone of social grace'.
Field Identification & Locations
Identify in the field by checking for the presence of the blue kyanite halo around rubies. It is commonly found in India, Brazil, and parts of Africa. Collectors look for vibrant red-to-matrix contrast.
