Black Pearl Granite (Gabbro/Norite)

Phaneritic Igneous Rock (primarily Mafic)

Rock Type: igneous

Black Pearl Granite (Gabbro/Norite)

Physical Properties

Hardness: 6-7 (Mohs scale), Color: Black with metallic blue/silver specks, Luster: Vitreous to sub-metallic, Crystal structure: Granular/Phaneritic, Specific gravity: 2.7-3.0

Formation & Geological History

Formed through the slow cooling of magnesium-rich and iron-rich magma beneath the Earth's surface. These are intrusive rocks typically Precambrian to Paleozoic in age.

Uses & Applications

Used extensively in construction for kitchen countertops, flooring, wall cladding, and monuments due to its extreme durability and resistance to acids.

Geological Facts

While commercially called 'Granite', it is mineralogically a Gabbro or Norite because it contains little to no quartz and is dominated by plagioclase feldspar and pyroxene.

Field Identification & Locations

Identify by its dark matrix with iridescent, scale-like mineral 'pearls' that catch the light. Primarily quarried in India (Andhra Pradesh). Tips: Highly scratch-resistant and low porosity.
