Formation & geological history

Formed via regional metamorphism and subsequent hydrothermal action. Tectonic pressure causes cracks in existing rock, which are later filled by silica-rich hot fluids that crystallize into quartz veins. Found frequently as water-worn pebbles in coastal or river environments.

Primarily used as decorative stones, pocket pebbles, and specimens for amateur geological collectors. Larger deposits are used in construction aggregate.

In folklore, these are known as 'Wishing Stones'; it is said that finding a stone with a single white band that circles the entire rock allows one to make a wish. The white bands are evidence of ancient seismic activity where the rock literally 'cracked' and healed.

Field identification & locations

Identify by looking for a distinct white line that contrasts against a darker, coarser host rock. Common in glacial till and high-energy beaches. To verify the vein is quartz, check if it can scratch glass.
