Formation & geological history
Formed in plutonic igneous rocks, particularly granites and pegmatites, as well as in some metamorphic rocks. The bluish-green color is caused by trace amounts of lead and water within the feldspar structure.

Popular gemstone for carvings, cabochons, and beads; widely collected as raw or polished display specimens; also used decoratively.
Geological facts
Named after the Amazon River, though no deposits have actually been found there; the green stone originally called Amazonite by early explorers was likely a different mineral such as jade or aventurine.
Field identification & locations
Identified by its distinctive pale turquoise to mint green color combined with the blocky cleavage typical of potassium feldspars. Commonly found in Brazil, Russia, Madagascar, India, and Colorado, USA.
