Formation & geological history

Formed via hydrothermal metamorphism where plagioclase feldspar in granite is replaced by epidote. Usually associated with Precambrian or Paleozoic eras.

Uses & applications

Used primarily as a lapidary stone for beads, cabochons, and decorative carvings. It is also used as an architectural stone and for metaphysical purposes.

Geological facts

First discovered in the Unaka Range of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the United States, which is how it earned its name. It is the state rock of Virginia.

Field identification & locations

Identifiable by its unique pistachio-green and salmon-pink 'Christmas' color combination. Commonly found as river pebbles in the Blue Ridge Mountains of VA/NC and in glacial till around the Great Lakes.
