Physical properties

Hardness: 6.5-7 (Mohs scale), Color: White with concentric pink bands, Luster: Waxy to vitreous, Crystal Structure: Trigonal/Microcrystalline, Cleavage: None, Specific Gravity: 2.58-2.64

Formation & geological history

Forms primarily in cavities of volcanic rocks (lavas) where silica-rich groundwater deposits layers of chalcedony over thousands of years. Often found in geodes or as nodules.

Uses & applications

Commonly used in jewelry for cabochons and beads, ornamental carvings, talismans, and as collected tumbled stones for metaphysical purposes.

Geological facts

The name comes from the Achates River in Sicily. The pink hue in this specimen is often due to iron or manganese inclusions, but can also be enhanced through heat treatment or dyeing in commercial trade.

Field identification & locations

Look for distinct concentric or parallel banding and a waxy surface texture. This specimen shows 'eye' formations. It is commonly found in Brazil, India, and the Lake Superior region of the USA.
