Physical properties

Hardness: 2.5-3.0 (Mohs); Color: Metallic golden yellow; Luster: Metallic; Crystal structure: Isometric (usually found in irregular masy forms); Cleavage: None; Specific Gravity: ~19.3

Formation & geological history

Formed in hydrothermal quartz veins via boiling or cooling of hot, mineral-rich fluids deep in the crust. Many are found as 'placer gold' after eroding into stream beds.

Uses & applications

Currency, jewelry, electronics (conductivity), dentistry, and investment (bullion).

Geological facts

Gold is incredibly ductile; a single ounce can be stretched into a wire 50 miles long. Unlike many other yellow minerals, gold is extremely heavy and won't shatter when hit, but will instead flatten.

Field identification & locations

Identify by its high density and malleability. Unlike pyrite ('fool's gold'), true gold will not spark when hit with steel and remains yellow even in shadow or low light.
