The word porphyry comes from the Ancient Greek word for 'purple', as Imperial Porphyry was a rare reddish-purple stone highly prized by Roman emperors. Rocks with this distinct 'snowflake' or speckled appearance are often colloquially called 'Chinese Writing Stone' or 'Snowflake Porphyry'.
Field identification & locations
Easily identified by large, well-defined rectangular or blocky white plagioclase crystals embedded within a fine-grained, dark greenish-grey matrix. Common along beaches, riverbeds, and glaciated terrain.
