Formation & Geological History
Formed through the hydrothermal metamorphism of granite, where plagioclase feldspar is replaced by epidote. Generally associated with the basement rocks of the Blue Ridge Province in the Appalachian Mountains.
Uses & Applications
Used primarily as a lapidary stone for beads, cabochons, and carvings. Also used high-end construction material (tiles/countertops) and as an architectural stone for landscaping.
Geological Facts
Unakite takes its name from the Unaka Range of the Appalachian Mountains where it was first discovered. It is the state rock of Virginia and is favored by crystal healers who associate it with emotional balance.
Field Identification & Locations
Identify in the field by its distinct 'Christmas' color combination of salmon-pink and pistachio-green. Commonly found in riverbeds and pebbled beaches downstream from metamorphic mountain ranges.
