Formation & geological history
Formed through the metamorphism of quartz-rich sandstone. High heat and pressure causes quartz grains to recrystallize and fuse together into a dense, hard rock. This specimen shows significant rounding from water erosion (alluvial/beach action).
Uses & applications
Used as an abrasive, in construction as crushed stone or railway ballast, as decorative landscaping stone, and occasionally as a source of silica for glass manufacturing.
Geological facts
Quartzite is so durable that it often remains as high ridges on mountains after softer surrounding rocks have eroded away. Unlike sandstone, which breaks around grains, quartzite breaks through its grains due to its high density and strength.
Field identification & locations
Identify in the field by its extreme hardness (it will easily scratch glass and stainless steel) and its granular, sugary texture on fresh breaks. It is commonly found in mountain belts and riverbeds worldwide.
