Formation & geological history
Formed from cooling lava that was rich in dissolved gases. As the magma reaches the surface, gases expand and form bubbles (vesicles) while the rock solidifies. Red coloration is caused by the oxidation of iron-bearing minerals (magnetite or olivine) during or after the eruption.
Uses & applications
Landscaping, drainage systems, gas grills, high-temperature insulation, and lightweight aggregate in concrete construction.
Geological facts
Scoria is similar to pumice but is denser and has larger vesicles. While pumice can often float on water, scoria usually sinks because its vesical walls are thicker and more mineral-rich.
Field identification & locations
Identified by its high porosity, rough abrasive texture, and many visible holes. It is commonly found in volcanic regions, cinder cones, and near the vents of basaltic volcanoes. Its red color is a key indicator of high iron oxidation.
