Formed in late-stage crystallization of pegmatites or in hydrothermal veins at high temperatures. Most deposits are found in Precambrian age rocks.

Unlike other varieties of quartz, rose quartz rarely forms well-defined crystal faces; it usually occurs as massive chunks. Its pink color is typically attributed to microscopic inclusions of dumortierite or similar fibrous minerals.
Field identification & locations
Identify by its characteristic pink hue, high hardness (will scratch glass), and lack of cleavage planes. Common in Brazil, Madagascar, South Africa, and the USA (South Dakota).
