Formation & geological history
Formed by the deposition and cementation of sand-sized mineral particles (mostly quartz) in river, beach, or desert environments. The swirling liesegang rings formed post-deposition when iron-bearing groundwater percolated through the porous rock, precipitation iron hydroxide/oxide bands.

The swirling patterns visible on the surface are called Liesegang rings or Liesegang bands, named after the German chemist Raphael E. Liesegang who discovered the secondary precipitation phenomenon in 1896.
