Formation & geological history
Formed in silica-poor igneous rocks such as nepheline syenites and phonolites, as well as in contact metamorphic environments. Most specimens come from Pre-Cambrian to Mesozoic formations.
Uses & applications
Used primarily as a gemstone, for decorative carvings, lapidary work, beads, and sometimes as architectural stone in countertops or tiles.
Geological facts
Sodalite was first discovered in Greenland in 1811 but became popular in 1891 when large deposits were found in Ontario, Canada. It is often confused with Lapis Lazuli but lacks the gold pyrite inclusions typical of Lapis.
Field identification & locations
Identify by its deep blue color, white calcite streaks, and lack of pyrite. It is common in Brazil, Canada (Bancroft), Namibia, and Russia. To distinguish from lapis, check for a lower specific gravity and the absence of golden metallic flecks.
