Formation & geological history

Formed through the hydrothermal metamorphism of granite, where plagioclase feldspar is replaced by epidote. Many specimens date back to the Precambrian era and are often found in metamorphic belts.

Uses & applications

Commonly used as a semi-precious gemstone for jewelry (beads, cabochons), carvings, decorative tiles, and architectural stone. It is also a popular stone for lapidary tumbling.

Geological facts

First discovered in the Unaka Range of the Appalachian Mountains in the United States, from which it takes its name. It is the state rock of Virginia.

Field identification & locations

Identify in the field by its distinct pistachio-green and salmon-pink mottled appearance. It is commonly found in the Blue Ridge Mountains of the USA, as well as in river rocks and beach pebbles in the Great Lakes region. Look for stones that do not show distinct layering but have a granite-like texture.
