Gold Nuggest

Native Gold (Au)

Rock Type: mineral

Gold Nuggest

Physical Properties

Hardness: 2.5-3 (Mohs). Color: Metallic yellow, golden-yellow. Luster: Metallic. Crystal structure: Isometric (usually found as irregular grains or nuggets). Specific gravity: 19.3 (very high). Malleable and ductile.

Formation & Geological History

Formed in hydrothermal quartz veins at high temperatures or concentrated in alluvial (placer) deposits through erosion and water transport. Usually associated with volcanic activity or ancient cratons.

Uses & Applications

Primary use in jewelry, investment (bullion), electronics due to high conductivity and corrosion resistance, and dentistry. Highly valued by collectors for its natural form.

Geological Facts

Unlike 'Fool's Gold' (Pyrite), real gold is soft enough to be dented with a needle and does not shatter. It is one of the least reactive chemical elements and is the most malleable metal known.

Field Identification & Locations

Identified in the field by its high density, golden streak, and malleability (it bends rather than breaks). Commonly found in stream beds or within quartz veins. Search for 'black sands' in rivers as an indicator.
