Formation & geological history
Formed when granite is altered by hydrothermal activity, where plagioclase feldspar is replaced by epidote. Many specimens date from the Proterozoic eon and are found in mountain ranges.
Uses & applications
Used primarily in lapidary work for cabochons, beads, and carvings. Also used as decorative architectural stone and in landscaping.
Geological facts
It was first discovered in the Unaka Range of North Carolina, USA, from which it derives its name. It is the state rock of Virginia.
Field identification & locations
Identify by its distinctive salmon-pink and pistachio-green mottled appearance. It is commonly found as pebbles along riverbeds and shores of the Great Lakes (glacial drift).
