Formation & geological history

Formed through hydrothermal metamorphism of granite, where plagioclase feldspar is replaced by epidote. Usually Found in metamorphic zones and as pebbles in glaciated areas.

Uses & applications

Used primarily as a decorative stone, in lapidary work for cabochons, beads, and carvings, and occasionally as architectural trim.

Geological facts

Unakite takes its name from the Unaka Range of the Appalachian Mountains in the United States, where it was first discovered. It is the state rock of Virginia.

Field identification & locations

Identify by its distinctive pink and green 'pistachio and ham' mottled appearance. Commonly found in riverbeds along the Blue Ridge Mountains and Lake Superior beaches.
