Formation & geological history

Formed primarily in geodes within volcanic rocks when hydrothermal fluids deposit silica and iron in cavities. Most date from the Cretaceous period in volcanic basalt beds.

Geological facts

The purple color is caused by irradiation of trivalent iron impurities within the quartz matrix. Amethyst was once considered a Cardinal Gem, equal in value to diamonds, until large deposits were found in Brazil.

Field identification & locations

Identify by its distinct purple hue and 7.0 hardness (it will scratch glass). Often found in Brazil, Uruguay, and Zambia. In the field, look for hexagonal crystal prisms within cavities of basalt rocks.
