Formation & geological history
Formed through the hydro-thermal metamorphism of granite where plagioclase feldspar is replaced by epidote. Usually associated with the Proterozoic era (approximately 1 billion years old in the Blue Ridge Mountains).
Uses & applications
Used primarily as a semi-precious lapidary stone for cabochons, beads, carvings, and architectural accents. Also used as road gravel in areas where it is abundant.
Geological facts
Unakite was first discovered in the Unaka Range of the Appalachian Mountains in North Carolina, USA. It is the state rock of Virginia.

Identify by its characteristic 'pistachio and ham' appearance (mottled pink and green). Commonly found in riverbeds and beaches of Lake Superior, and the Blue Ridge Mountains of the Eastern United States.
