Overview

Kalahari Jasper is a picture jasper associated with the Kalahari region of southern Africa. It shows warm desert palettes of tan, brown, ochre, and cream arranged in scenic bands that often evoke dunes, savanna, and distant horizons.

Like all jasper it is opaque microcrystalline quartz colored by iron oxides. The earthy African scenery makes it a desirable lapidary and collector stone, comparable in appeal to Oregon picture jaspers but with its own warm desert character.

Formation & geology

Kalahari Jasper formed where silica-rich groundwater precipitated as dense microcrystalline quartz within sediments and fractured rock of southern Africa. Iron oxides and hydroxides introduced during deposition supplied the warm tan, brown, and ochre coloring.

Layered deposition and the migration of iron-bearing solutions created the scenic banding, while gentle structural tilting can give the layers dune- or horizon-like profiles. Prolonged silicification cemented the material into a hard, polishable stone holding its desert-like imagery.

How to identify it

Look for an opaque jasper with warm desert-toned scenic banding in tan, brown, ochre, and cream.

  • Hardness: 6.5-7; scratches glass.
  • Luster: dull to waxy raw, vitreous polished.
  • Streak: white to pale brown.
  • Look-alikes: Oregon picture jaspers (Biggs, Deschutes) show similar scenery; Kalahari typically runs warm and earthy and is tied to African provenance. Brown jasper is similar but lacks the layered scenic banding.

Uses & significance

Kalahari Jasper is a lapidary and collector stone, slabbed for natural-art display and cut into cabochons and pendants that showcase its desert scenery. Cleanly composed slabs are most prized.

Durable at near 7 Mohs, it polishes well and is reliable in jewelry. As a picture jasper it carries metaphysical associations with grounding, endurance, and connection to the land, traditional beliefs rather than scientifically established properties.

Frequently asked questions

Where does Kalahari jasper come from?

It is associated with the Kalahari region of southern Africa, where it forms in silica-rich sediments and rock.

What does Kalahari jasper look like?

It shows warm desert-toned scenic banding in tan, brown, ochre, and cream that often resembles dunes and savanna.

How is Kalahari jasper different from Oregon picture jasper?

Both are scenic picture jaspers, but Kalahari comes from Africa and tends toward warm earthy desert tones, while Oregon material varies by locality.

Is Kalahari jasper good for jewelry?

Yes. At 6.5-7 Mohs it is durable and takes a fine polish for cabochons and pendants.
