Overview
Novaculite is a very fine-grained, dense, hard siliceous sedimentary rock composed almost entirely of microcrystalline quartz. It is best known commercially as Arkansas stone or Washita stone, the premium natural whetstone used for sharpening knives and tools.
Its color ranges from pure white to gray, and the finest grades are slightly translucent. The name comes from the Latin novacula, meaning razor, reflecting its sharpening use.
It is essentially a recrystallized form of chert or bedded silica, valued for its uniform, fine texture.
Formation & geology
Novaculite formed from silica-rich marine sediments, largely the remains of microscopic siliceous organisms and chemically precipitated silica, deposited on ancient sea floors. Over time, deep burial, low-grade metamorphism, and recrystallization transformed this silica into an extremely fine, dense, interlocking quartz rock.
The classic deposits occur in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas and Oklahoma, in the Arkansas Novaculite formation of Devonian to Mississippian age. Folding and uplift of the Ouachitas exposed the beds that are quarried today.
Similar novaculites are reported in other ancient orogenic belts worldwide.
How to identify it
Look for a hard, dense, very fine-grained white to gray rock with a smooth, sometimes waxy or sugary texture and conchoidal to splintery fracture. Hardness is about 7, so it scratches glass and resists steel; streak is white.
Distinguish it from chalk and limestone (much softer, fizz in acid) and from ordinary chert (often darker and less uniformly fine). Novaculite's extreme uniform fineness and use as a whetstone are practical clues.
Its ability to sharpen steel without crumbling distinguishes it from softer sedimentary rocks.
