Overview
Rubellite is the red to deep pink variety of tourmaline, typically the elbaite species. The name comes from the Latin for reddish. The finest rubellite shows a rich, saturated red or raspberry color that rivals ruby and, importantly, stays red under both daylight and incandescent light.
The color is produced by manganese in the crystal. Stones that shift toward brown or noticeably paler under artificial light are usually classed as pink tourmaline rather than true rubellite, which keeps its strong red glow.
Rubellite has been treasured for centuries; some famous historical rubies in royal collections were later found to be rubellite tourmaline. Today it remains one of the most valued tourmaline colors.
Formation & geology
Rubellite forms in granitic pegmatites, crystallizing from boron-rich fluids in open pockets where manganese is available to produce the red coloring. It frequently grows alongside other elbaite colors and lithium minerals such as lepidolite.
The depth and quality of the red depend on the manganese content and the trace balance during growth; high iron tends to darken or brown the color.
Notable sources include Brazil, Madagascar, Nigeria, Mozambique, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Russia, and the United States (Maine and California). Brazil and Africa supply much of the fine material.
How to identify it
Look for red to raspberry-pink prismatic crystals with the rounded triangular cross-section and strong lengthwise striations typical of tourmaline. Hardness is 7-7.5 with vitreous luster, white streak, and no cleavage.
Rubellite shows strong dichroism, often appearing two shades of red or pink from different directions. Unlike ruby (hexagonal corundum, hardness 9, single strong red), tourmaline is softer and shows doubled facet edges from strong double refraction.
Many rubellites are noticeably included, sometimes with visible internal fractures, which is normal for the variety. True rubellite holds its red under incandescent light, distinguishing it from pink tourmaline that grays out.
Uses & significance
Rubellite is a popular jewelry gemstone, faceted into rings, pendants, and earrings, valued for its ruby-like color at a more accessible price. Larger eye-clean stones are scarce because the material is often included, so clean rubellite commands premiums.
It is also collected as crystals and as part of multicolor tourmaline specimens. Value depends on the richness of the red, color stability under different lighting, clarity, and size.
Metaphysically, rubellite is associated with the heart, passion, and vitality. These meanings are traditional rather than scientific.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between rubellite and pink tourmaline?
Rubellite keeps a strong red or raspberry color under both daylight and artificial light, while pink tourmaline pales or grays out under incandescent light.
What gives rubellite its red color?
Traces of manganese in the elbaite tourmaline structure produce the red to raspberry-pink color.
Is rubellite the same as ruby?
No. Rubellite is red tourmaline; ruby is corundum, harder and a different mineral, though historically some rubellites were mistaken for rubies.
Why are clean rubellites expensive?
Rubellite is commonly included with fractures, so eye-clean stones with rich, stable red color are scarce and command higher prices.
