Overview
Sardonyx is a banded variety of chalcedony (microcrystalline quartz) that combines the reddish-brown to orange layers of sard with the contrasting white or black layers of onyx. The result is straight, parallel bands of warm brown alternating with light or dark.
Valued since ancient Greece and Rome, sardonyx was one of the most important hardstones for carving cameos, intaglios, and seals, because the layered colors let artisans carve a raised light figure against a dark or red ground.
Its combination of durability, fine grain, and natural color banding makes it a classic ornamental and gem material, and it is a traditional birthstone for August.
Formation & geology
Sardonyx forms when silica-rich solutions deposit successive layers of chalcedony in cavities and fractures of volcanic and sedimentary rocks. Iron impurities tint certain layers reddish-brown (sard), while others remain white or, with treatment, black (onyx).
The straight, parallel banding distinguishes onyx-type chalcedony from the curved banding of ordinary agate, reflecting layer-by-layer deposition on flat surfaces inside the cavity. Color contrast is sometimes enhanced by traditional dyeing or heat treatment.
Major sources of the raw chalcedony include India (notably for fine reddish material), Brazil, Uruguay, and Germany, with cutting and carving centers worldwide.
How to identify it
Look for straight, parallel bands of reddish-brown to orange (sard) alternating with white or black layers, in an opaque to translucent stone with a waxy-to-vitreous luster. Hardness is 6.5-7, streak white, fracture conchoidal, no cleavage.
The straight banding distinguishes sardonyx from agate, which typically shows curved or concentric bands. The brown sard component separates it from plain black-and-white onyx and from solid-color carnelian or sard.
Its hardness (about 7) rules out softer brown stones, and chalcedony's density and toughness separate it from glass imitations, which may show bubbles or molded banding.
Uses & significance
Sardonyx has been a premier carving material for over two millennia, used for cameos, intaglios, seals, and signet rings where layered colors create striking relief images. It is also cut into beads, cabochons, and inlay.
Its durability and attractive banding suit it to both fine and ornamental jewelry, and it remains popular for classic and antique-style pieces. As the August birthstone it carries traditional gift significance.
Metaphysically, sardonyx is associated with strength, protection, willpower, and stable relationships, though these attributes are spiritual beliefs rather than scientifically supported facts.
Frequently asked questions
What is sardonyx made of?
Sardonyx is a banded chalcedony (microcrystalline quartz) combining reddish-brown sard layers with white or black onyx layers.
How is sardonyx different from onyx?
Onyx has black-and-white (or single dark) bands, while sardonyx adds reddish-brown sard layers, giving it warm color alongside the light or dark banding.
Why is sardonyx good for cameos?
Its straight, contrasting color layers let carvers cut a light raised figure against a darker or red background, ideal for cameos and intaglios.
Is sardonyx a birthstone?
Yes. Sardonyx is one of the traditional birthstones for August, alongside peridot.
