Tourmalinated quartz forms in environments where both quartz and tourmaline crystallize together, most commonly in granite pegmatites and hydrothermal veins. Slender schorl tourmaline crystals form first, and later silica-rich fluids deposit quartz that grows around and encloses the tourmaline needles.

The trapped tourmaline rods remain suspended within the finished quartz crystal, creating the characteristic included texture. The needles can be sparse or densely packed.

Good material comes from pegmatite regions including Brazil, Madagascar, and other granitic terrains worldwide where schorl and quartz coexist.

How to identify it

Look for clear to milky quartz containing straight, slender, jet-black needles or rods (schorl tourmaline) running through it, sometimes radiating or randomly oriented. The quartz host is hardness 7 with a vitreous luster and conchoidal fracture.

The inclusions are distinctly black, opaque and needle-shaped, and unlike surface markings they are clearly inside the transparent quartz. Streak is white.

Look-alikes include rutilated quartz (golden/reddish metallic needles, not black) and dendritic or included quartz with other minerals. The defining feature is true black tourmaline needles embedded in quartz; black inclusions plus quartz hardness 7 confirm it. Black tourmaline alone is opaque without the clear quartz matrix.
