Hardness (0.5-2.0), Waxy/tacky texture, greasy luster, color ranges from black/brown to grey/white, insoluble in water, melts at 62°C.

Formation & Geological History

Produced in the digestive system of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus). It forms around indigestible giant squid beaks; once expelled, it floats in the ocean and undergoes oxidation for years or decades.

Uses & Applications

Historical use in high-end perfumery as a fixative (extending scent duration) and ingredient in ancient medicines or flavoring.

Geological Facts

Often called 'floating gold' because it is extremely rare and valuable. Over time, its smell changes from fecal to a sweet, earthy, or musk-like aroma.

Field Identification & Locations

Look for a waxy, stone-like object that floats in salt water (unlike most rocks) and reacts to a hot needle test by melting into a dark liquid or producing white smoke.
