Physical Properties

Hardness: 6.5-7 on Mohs scale; Color: Earthy tones including brown, tan, and black; Luster: Vitreous to waxy; Structure: Microcrystalline/Cryptocrystalline; Specific Gravity: 2.58 - 2.91.

Formation & Geological History

Formed from silica-rich petrified mud or volcanic ash flows. The patterns are created by mineral-laden water flow through the parent rock before it fully solidified. Many specimens date back to the Tertiary period.

Uses & Applications

Used primarily in lapidary arts for cabochons, beads, ornamental carvings, and decorative home decor objects. Highly valued by collectors for its landscape-like patterns.

Geological Facts

The unique 'pictures' or landscapes seen in the rock are caused by dendritic patterns of iron oxide and other mineral impurities. It is often referred to as the 'Global Awareness' stone in metaphysical circles.

Field Identification & Locations

Identify by its opaque, silicate nature and distinct brownish-tan banding that resembles a desert landscape. Commonly found in regions with high volcanic activity like Oregon and Idaho in the USA.
