Formation & geological history

Formed from rapid cooling of high-silica rhyolitic lava that solidifies before crystals can grow. These specific rounded nodules are typically weathered from perlite beds. Age ranges from Tertiary to recent.

Uses & applications

Commonly used in jewelry (pendant and bead material), meditation/metaphysical practices, and as cabinet specimens for rock collectors. Historically used by Indigenous people for arrowheads and cutting tools.

Geological facts

Legend says the stone was formed from the tears of family members of Apache warriors who leapt to their deaths off a cliff to avoid surrender. When held to a light, they are usually translucent despite appearing opaque black.

Field identification & locations

Identify by holding to a strong light source; a true Apache Tear will be translucent chocolate brown or gray inside. Found in volcanic areas, notably Superior, Arizona. Unlike regular obsidian chunks, these are naturally rounded 'droplets'.
