Formation & geological history

Formed through the rapid cooling of viscous silicic lava, typically of rhyolitic composition. These specimens are rounded nodules or 'pebbles' of obsidian that occur within a gray perlite matrix, often dating back to the Tertiary period.

Uses & applications

Used in lapidary work for cabochons and jewelry, as popular 'pocket stones' for collectors, and in metaphysical practices as 'healing' stones.

Geological facts

Legend says they originated from the tears of the women of the Apache tribe after many warriors leapt to their deaths from a cliff to avoid capture by the cavalry; the tears were said to have turned to stone upon hitting the ground.

Field identification & locations

Identify by holding them up to a strong light source; many will appear smoky or translucent rather than opaque black. Commonly found in Arizona (notably near Superior) and Nevada. Collectors look for high translucence and smooth surfaces.
