Extensively used in construction as an aggregate for road base and railroad ballast, in the production of cement, and as a soil conditioner in agriculture.

Field identification & locations
Identify in the field by testing with cold dilute hydrochloric acid; it will effervesce (fizz) vigorously. It often contains visible fossils of marine organisms.
