Formation & geological history

Formed through the hydrothermal metamorphism of granite, where plagioclase feldspar is replaced by epidote. It is commonly associated with the Precambrian Blue Ridge Mountains in the United States.

Uses & applications

Commonly used as a semi-precious gemstone for cabochons, beads, and stone carvings. Also used as an architectural stone and in construction as crushed aggregate.

Geological facts

Unakite was first discovered in the Unaka Range of the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina, USA, from which it takes its name. It is the state rock of Virginia.
