Formation & geological history

Formed through hydrothermal metamorphism of granite where plagioclase feldspar is replaced by epidote. Usually associated with the Proterozoic era, approximately 1 to 1.2 billion years ago.

Uses & applications

Commonly used as a decorative stone, in lapidary work for cabochons and beads, architectural cladding, and as an ornamental gemstone in carvings.

Geological facts

Unakite was first discovered in the Unaka Range of the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina, USA, from which it derives its name. It is also found as pebbles in glacial till near Lake Superior.

Field identification & locations

Identify by its unique pistachio-green and salmon-pink mottled appearance. It is commonly found in riverbeds and mountainous regions in Virginia, North Carolina, and South Africa. Collectors should look for balanced color distribution.
