Bismuthinite is a bismuth sulfide mineral (Bi2S3) and one of the most important ores of bismuth. Its old name, bismuth glance, refers to its bright metallic luster.

It typically forms as lead-gray to tin-white masses, foliated aggregates, and slender prismatic or needle-like crystals with striations, often showing a yellowish or iridescent tarnish. It closely resembles stibnite, its antimony analogue.

Bismuthinite is the principal natural source of bismuth, a heavy but low-toxicity metal valued for its use in pharmaceuticals, low-melting alloys, and as a nontoxic substitute for lead.

Formation & geology

Bismuthinite forms in high-temperature hydrothermal veins and in pegmatites, often associated with tin, tungsten, and gold mineralization. It also occurs in contact metamorphic deposits and in some porphyry and vein systems.

It is commonly found with native bismuth, cassiterite, wolframite, arsenopyrite, molybdenite, and various sulfides.

Notable localities include the tin-tungsten deposits of Bolivia (such as Tasna and Llallagua), Cornwall in England, Saxony in Germany, the Cobalt district in Canada, Australia, and various mines in China and Peru.

Look for a soft, lead-gray to tin-white metallic mineral, often as slender striated needles, blades, or foliated masses, sometimes with yellowish or iridescent tarnish.

Bismuthinite is very soft (hardness 2), can be cut with a knife, and is quite heavy. It has one direction of perfect cleavage and a lead-gray streak. It melts very easily in a flame.

Its closest look-alike is stibnite (antimony sulfide), which is similar in form but slightly lighter; bismuthinite is denser and melts even more readily. Galena (cubic cleavage) and other gray sulfides can also resemble it, so density and chemical tests help confirm.
