Formation & geology
Bronze Sheen Obsidian forms by the rapid cooling of silica-rich lava into amorphous glass. As the viscous lava flowed, immense numbers of tiny gas bubbles or nanoparticles became aligned along flow surfaces.
When light reflects from these densely packed, parallel layers, interference generates a metallic sheen; layer spacing and inclusion type that favor warm wavelengths yield bronze and copper tones rather than silver or gold. Because the effect depends on layer orientation, the sheen is directional and shifts as the stone is rotated.
How to identify it
Confirm obsidian: conchoidal fracture, vitreous luster, hardness ~5-5.5, white streak. The diagnostic feature is a bronze or coppery sheen that floats over the black body and moves with viewing angle.
Tilt the piece in light to see the warm shimmer sweep across the surface; there is no transparent bronze body color.
Look-alikes: bronzite (a true crystalline pyroxene with a fibrous bronze schiller, opaque and harder ~5.5-6), gold sheen obsidian (cooler, yellower sheen), and pyrite-flecked stones (metallic but granular). The glassy fracture and floating sheen identify the obsidian.
