Formation & geological history

Formed in igneous environments, primarily pegmatites and granites, as well as metamorphic rocks. The bluish-green color is derived from trace amounts of lead and water within the feldspar structure.

Used primarily as an ornamental stone, for lapidary work, cabochon gems, carvings, and popular among mineral collectors and crystal enthusiasts.

Geological facts

Named after the Amazon River, although no deposits have actually been found there. Ancient Egyptians used amazonite for carving beads, amulets, and making jewelry, including pieces found in King Tutankhamun's tomb.

Field identification & locations

Identified by its characteristic grid-like microcline twinning structure (perthitic textures), pale mint green-blue hue, and vitreous to pearly sheen on cleavage planes. Commonly found in Brazil, Russia, Madagascar, Mozambique, and Colorado, USA.
