Formation & geological history

Forms primarily in pegmatites and granitic rocks through hydrothermal activity and slow cooling of magma. The green color is traditionally attributed to trace amounts of lead and water within the potassium feldspar structure.

Uses & applications

Used primarily as a gemstone in cabochons, beads, and ornamental carvings, as well as a popular specimen for mineral collectors.

Geological facts

Despite its name, there is very little amazonite found in the Amazon River basin; the name comes from the Amazon River where green stones were historically confused with other green minerals. It exhibits a distinct microcline twinning pattern often visible as a whitish grid.

Field identification & locations

Can be identified in the field by its distinct vibrant blue-green color combined with the characteristic grid-like twinning on cleavage planes typical of potassium feldspars. Major sources include the United States (Colorado), Russia, Madagascar, and Brazil.
