Physical properties

Bright emerald- to grass-green color with distinctive concentric or parallel banding; typically silky, vitreous, or waxy luster when polished; monoclinic crystal system; perfect cleavage in one direction but commonly massive and fibrous rather than visibly crystalline. Mohs hardness 3.5–4; specific gravity about 3.6–4.0. The specimen is polished and rounded, probably a small cabochon or tumbled ornamental piece. The very regular black bands make exact identification from the photograph uncertain and warrant checking for dyed or manufactured material.

Formation & geological history

Malachite is a secondary copper-carbonate mineral formed near the surface during oxidation and weathering of copper sulfide deposits, commonly alongside azurite, chrysocolla, limonite, and copper oxides. It can form as crusts, botryoidal masses, stalactitic growths, or banded aggregates in fractures and cavities. Its age depends on the host ore deposit; malachite is generally geologically young relative to the original copper-bearing rocks, forming during later weathering episodes rather than at one specific global age.

Uses & applications

Used as a decorative and lapidary stone for cabochons, beads, boxes, carvings, and inlay. Historically ground as a green pigment, although modern use of malachite pigment is limited. It has minor importance as a copper ore and is valued primarily for its attractive banding and color rather than for high gem durability.

Geological facts

The name derives from the Greek word for mallow, referring to its green color. Malachite’s green streak and vivid color are highly characteristic. It is closely associated with blue azurite and may occur as mixed azurite-malachite material. Malachite dust and powdered material should not be inhaled or ingested because copper compounds can be toxic.

Field identification & locations

Commonly found in oxidized copper deposits in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia, Namibia, Russia, Australia, the United States (notably Arizona and New Mexico), Mexico, and Chile. In the field, look for vivid green color, curved or concentric banding, a pale green streak, relatively low hardness, and a reaction to dilute hydrochloric acid that may produce effervescence. A polished piece should be tested cautiously: malachite is softer than glass and can be scratched by a steel point, while the black material may be harder. The image alone cannot distinguish natural malachite from dyed serpentine, dyed carbonate, resin composite, or another green banded stone.
