Formation & geological history
The host rock is an igneous volcanic rock formed from rapid cooling of magnesium-rich and iron-rich lava. The vein formed later when hydrothermal fluids rich in silica filled fractures in the basalt, cooling to form quartz or chalcedony.

Geological facts
The single band across the stone is often referred to in folklore as a 'Wishing Stone' - finding a pebble with a continuous white line circling it is said to bring good luck.
