Formation & geological history

Formed in relatively cool temperatures via precipitation from silica-rich groundwater into cavities in other rocks. Red inclusions are iron oxide (hematite). Many specimens date back millions of years.

Primarily used in jewelry (cabochons), signet rings, carvings, and as a birthstone for March. Also popular as a healing crystal in some cultures.
