Formation & geological history

Forms at relatively low temperatures through the deposition of silica-rich fluids in fractures and cavities of volcanic and sedimentary rocks. Green color is caused by inclusions of chlorite or amphibole needles, while the red spots are inclusions of iron oxide (hematite).

Uses & applications

Widely used as a gemstone in jewelry, especially for cabochons, beads, and carved signet rings. Also popular as a tumbled pocket stone or decorative item.

Geological facts

Historically known as Heliotrope, meaning 'sun-turner' in ancient Greek, due to the belief that it reflected the rays of the setting sun. In Christian tradition of the Middle Ages, the red spots were believed to represent the blood of Jesus Christ fallen upon a green jasper at the foot of the cross.
